Celebrating the people and services that build stronger communities
This coming Friday, 27 June, county and city councils across Ireland will unite to celebrate Your Council Day, a national awareness campaign that highlights the essential work of local authorities and the dedicated individuals behind the services that support our communities every day.
Coordinated by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) and supported by all 31 local authorities, Your Council Day showcases the wide range of services our councils provide.
This year’s theme, Building Stronger Communities, focuses on how councils foster environments where people feel connected, supported, and empowered to thrive.
Our county and city councils deliver over 1,000 services that touch nearly every aspect of daily life, from housing and roads to libraries, tourism, and community development.
In keeping with the theme, councils play a vital role in:
- Creating and maintaining parks, libraries, and community centres that promote social connection.
- Supporting local democracy and encouraging public participation.
- Driving economic development through enterprise supports and town revitalisation.
- Empowering community and voluntary groups to improve local life.
- Planning for sustainable and inclusive growth.
To mark Your Council Day, councils will share a rich variety of content across their social media platforms, including:
- Videos and photos from festivals, parks, and community events.
- Interviews with staff and behind-the-scenes footage showcasing council services.
- A suite of staff-led videos highlighting the roles and impact of council employees.
- Contributions from Chief Executives, Cathaoirligh, and directorates reflecting on the theme.
- Highlights from key events like council meetings and housing initiatives.
Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, John Cummins, comments: “Our local authorities play a vital role in the daily lives of people and communities across the country. From delivering essential services to supporting vulnerable residents and fostering economic development, their work is deeply impactful. I want to recognise and thank our local authority staff, councillors, and partners for their dedication and commitment.”
Chair of the County and City Management Association (CCMA), Anna Marie Delaney, added: “Your Council Day is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the work our councils do to support communities and to increase awareness of the essential role local authorities play. With over 1,000 services impacting daily life—from roads and housing to arts and tourism—this day showcases the breadth and depth of local government.”
As part of Your Council Day 2025, each local authority will showcase the work taking place in their local area through their social media channels, using the hashtags #YourCouncilDay and #DoLáSaChomhairle.
