Your Council Day
Your Council Day is the national event that celebrates local government. It's our opportunity to highlight the role that our county and city councils plays in Irish society, delivering essential services and making a positive impact for individuals, businesses and communities.
Your Council Day 2025 takes place on 27 June, and this year's theme is Building Strong Communities.
What is Your Council Day?
Your Council Day is a national campaign designed to raise awareness about the services and work carried out by local government in Ireland. It celebrates the role of county and city councils and the dedication of their staff. Coordinated by the Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) and supported by all 31 local authorities, the day aims to:
- Highlight local authority services and achievements.
- Celebrate the commitment of local authority staff.
- Increase public awareness about the role of county and city councils, which have a very important and positive impact on our daily lives.
What happens on Your Council Day?
On Friday, 27 June 2025, local authorities will:
- Share stories and content on social media using hashtags #YourCouncilDay and #DoLáSaChomhairle.
- Highlight services, staff and community initiatives.
- Engage with the public, councillors and community groups.
- Host or align with local events (e.g. walking tours, consultations, celebrations).
- Use traditional media and digital platforms to promote their work.
- Share behind-the-scenes content, personal staff stories and innovative projects to give people an insight into local authority services and life.
Our county and city councils work closely with a diverse network of stakeholders and partners across Irish society. Elected councillors advocate on behalf of citizens, while Government agencies collaborate with local authorities to implement national policies. State bodies and non-profit organisations work with local authorities to deliver vital services, and community groups partner with councils to enhance life in both urban and rural areas. As part of Your Council Day 2025, these stakeholders and partners will showcase and celebrate their collaboration with local authorities through online platforms.
What is the 2025 theme?
The Your Council Day theme in 2025 is Building Stronger Communities. Local authorities create environments where people feel connected, supported, and empowered to thrive together. It's a broad theme, allowing councils to showcase their excellence across diverse services. Every day, your county or city council is Building Stronger Communities through a multitude of initiatives and projects that are managed and led by our county and city councils. Just some examples of their leadership in this regard:
Community Spaces
Parks, libraries, community centres, and other shared spaces that promote social connection are council managed and operated.
Local Democracy
Councils lead in engaging citizens in decision-making through elections, Public Participation Networks (PPNs), Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs), and public consultations.
Local Economic Development
Councils are to the fore in supporting local business services that we avail of on a constant basis through Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs), grants, and Town Centre First initiatives.
Community and Voluntary Groups
Councils partner with community groups to create inclusive spaces and empower residents to improve their communities.
Planning
Vibrant, liveable communities are led by councils through development plans that influence our lives every day.

How does my council and local government impact upon my life?
Local government plays a big part in our everyday lives, often in ways we might not even notice. Whether it's the roads we drive on, the bins we put out, or the parks we enjoy, our local council is behind it all. Across Ireland, there are 31 local authorities— county and city councils— responsible for the delivery of over 1,000 services. These include the provision of housing, waste management, road maintenance, emergency response, environmental protection, and support for local communities and businesses. These services help keep our towns and cities running smoothly and sustainably.
But local government isn’t just about services—it’s also about giving people a voice. Through elected councillors, we have a say in how our communities are run. Local councils can make byelaws that affect everyday things like parking, trading, and litter control. And when new rules are proposed, we’re invited to share our views, making sure decisions reflect the needs and opinions of the people who live there.
