The 2025 Local Government Ireland Graduate Planner Programme is now open for applications, offering opportunities to work in city and county councils across Ireland. The programme provides graduates with structured professional development and hands-on planning experience that both benefits communities and supports long-term career growth.

A practical start with real-world impact

Graduate planners in local authorities play a valuable role in shaping how Ireland’s towns, cities, and rural areas grow and evolve. Working as part of a professional team within a council’s planning department, you’ll gain experience across a range of responsibilities: from reviewing planning applications and providing advice, to contributing to local area plans and sustainability strategies.

Local authority planning teams work on everything from housing and transport to heritage and public spaces. The focus is on practical, balanced development that benefits communities and supports long-term sustainability. As a graduate planner, you'll have a chance to be part of these efforts, developing the built environment and helping to address planning challenges on the ground.

Develop your career in a supportive environment

The programme includes a structured graduate development path designed specifically for planners in local government. You’ll receive training in planning fundamentals, attend workshops on key planning topics, and take part in a comprehensive mentoring scheme. It’s an environment that supports learning, collaboration, and steady professional growth.

You’ll also be part of a forward-thinking and supportive team culture, with an emphasis on well-being and flexible working arrangements. While you won’t be expected to lead major developments from day one, you will have a real role and a clear opportunity to grow your skills in a public service setting.

What you need to apply

Applicants must hold (or be due to complete this year) an Honours Degree in Planning — Level 8 or higher on the National Framework of Qualifications. Strong communication, analytical thinking, and a collaborative mindset are all key. Non-EU/EEA applicants must have the right to work in Ireland, including a valid employment permit if required.

What’s on offer

  • Starting salary of €38,956, with annual increments
  • Structured support for your professional development
  • 24 days of annual leave
