What is the WAM programme?

The WAM Programme supports graduates with disabilities to access work experience in mainstream employment. It does this by bringing together graduates and employers through paid, mentored placements, with structured support in place for both the participant and the organisation.

WAM is delivered by AHEAD, a non-profit organisation that works to create more inclusive education and employment environments. The programme is funded by the Department of Social Protection.

Since 2005, WAM has supported over 700 graduate placements across the public and private sectors. Local authorities have been partnering with the programme since 2022, with 41 graduates successfully placed in the sector to date.

What roles are available?

For 2026, placements are available in a wide range of areas, including:

  • Communications
  • Community
  • Climate and Environment
  • Facilities
  • Finance
  • Human Resources
  • Housing
  • Library and Data Analysis
  • Local Enterprise
  • Smart Cities

Placements vary in duration depending on the role and local authority.

Who can apply?

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a graduate with a disability
  • Hold a relevant NFQ Level 6 qualification or higher at the time of application
  • Be available to take up a full-time placement from May 2026

Candidates may apply for up to three roles. Some roles may list specific qualifications or experience as desirable. Applicants are strongly encouraged to read each job description carefully before applying.

What support does the programme offer?

Each successful candidate is assigned a workplace mentor within the host local authority. This person is not the participant’s line manager, but someone who provides guidance, support, and a point of contact throughout the placement.

Both mentors and participants receive training before the placement begins.

The aim is to ensure that graduates gain:

  • Practical, relevant work experience
  • Exposure to a real organisational environment
  • Opportunities to develop confidence, professional skills, and networks
